The Ocean
The ocean is a wondrous place, teeming with life. As the
ocean is the main component of Earth, it is integral to life, forms part of
the carbon cycle, and influences climate and weather patterns.
The World Ocean is the habitat of 230,000 known species,
but because much of it is unexplored, the number of species that exist in the
ocean is much larger, possibly over two million. It is also the first place
where life emerged: in the form of single cellular life.
Our oceans, or more correctly, our ocean, the World Ocean is an integral part of life on this planet. In
addition to being the place where life first arised, it is a major component in
the climates in which we live in. As humans have failed to stop global warming,
the waters are rising, and drinkable water is drying up. This is a great
problem for living beings on land, but on the other side of the spectrum, the
space in which marine animals can thrive in is rising greatly- although because
of the change in temperature, they will possibly die out as well.
Unfortunately, humans have messed with this aspect too: with
overfishing and pollution, sea life is becoming more and more endangered all
the time. Species are going extinct, illegal fishing is still active.
All for the
sake of human consumption, and even entertainment, with orcas and dolphins and
other animals being kept in captivity. If we keep polluting the seas, and
ruining the ecosystems, in the end all that will be left of the life in seas
will be jellyfish and other resilient creatures.
We have not even discovered most of the deep blue yet; in fact
we are very very far from it, ad humanity is already thinking foolishly about
going to other planets. We must discover what is on our own planet first, and
learn to appreciate the beauty of life and death before seeking it in space. We
don’t even know what’s left in the oceans to explore, but we are already ruining
it all. Who knows what rests in the abyss?
The ocean is sure to
swallow everything day; even if it takes millions of years. We all come from
the ocean, and we will all return to the ocean.
